Women, Water, Survival! $10K+ raised to avert crisis!
Hello, Supporters and Friends,
Women Rising Legacy Project is thrilled to share our most recent updates reflecting transformative gains for the Project:
The WOMEN: Chingwell’s visit in July, her first in 3 years, affirmed the powerful transition of the women members from participants in/recipients of the Project to owning it! It is their Project, now, just as we envisioned from the start. Our U.S.-based Team, Kasuu (our DRC-Based Project Lead), and the Project members are all co-creators of this shining STAR that is Women Rising Legacy Project, carving out a sustainable solution in the midst of mining and poverty and danger. Bravo!!
§ The WATER: Last month, the mining companies that operate 24/7 in this region (and continuously push to take Clan lands) warned the residents along the beautiful little river that serves the Farm and our circle of villages to NOT USE THE WATER! Toxic pollution from the poorly regulated mining activities has contaminated the river and even playing in it can be harmful! The women must now walk an hour to the nearest safe source and bring water back in bladder totes on their heads. Clean water is essential for survival! In response, our U.S. Team conducted a GoFundMe Campaign to establish 2 deep wells at the Farm. The enormous generosity of many has helped us raise nearly $10,500, well exceeding the original $7,500 we hoped for! Huge thanks to every one of you who made a gift!
§ The PUMP KITS: Unfortunately, the original and rushed cost estimate for addressing this water crisis was woefully inadequate. With prices always changing in this deeply poor country with its rampant corruption, we now know that an additional $6,000-$6,500 is needed to purchase, ship and install the solar pumps/panel kits. We acknowledge that this can be disappointing to our wonderful supporters who thought we were home free. Yet, we are undeterred! Our emergency grant proposal to UAF-Africa Rapid Response agency will be submitted in the next few days, and we are appealing to small foundations who are fans of the Project.
